College Application Tip #1: Take Your Time
There is no way to create a stand-out application overnight. You are going to need to take your time--a lot of time--if you want to get it just right. This is especially true if you are applying to more than one school or an especially selective school. The exact amount of time needed will vary depending on how demanding a school's college application process is and how fast you work. To avoid complications, it is best to give yourself at least one month's time for each school you will be applying to.
College Application Tip #2: Write an Authentic Essay
The essay portion of the college application isn't the most critical, but it has the potential to be. If you are able to showcase yourself and your personality in your essay, your college application is sure to stand out. When you choose your topic, pick something that is personal to you. It can be something funny, sad, enlightening--anything that is authentic and honest will do. You want the person who reads your essay to feel some sort of genuine emotion towards you and your application.
College Application Tip #3: Include an Addendum
Different schools require different things during the college application process. Some want three essays, where others want two. Some ask for recommendation letters, and some do not. One thing that is never asked for, but is always allowable is an addendum. An addendum is an additional document that you can submit to strengthen your application. For example, if you are applying to a writing program, you could include a story or poem with your application. They key is to carefully choose the addendum. If it doesn't add to your application, it makes no sense to include it. Also, keep it simple--one page is more than enough.
